The Good Skin Company offer age spots treatments from our Hampton Hill Clinic, serving Richmond, Twickenham & Teddington in South West London, for people who are suffering from this condition.

Age spots are flat, generally brown spots on the skin. They vary in colour from a café au lait colour to a deep brown.  They usually occur on sun-exposed areas of your skin. They have the same texture as your surrounding skin and are painless.  Age spots are also called liver spots, senile lentigo, solar lentigines, or sun spots.  Age spots aren’t dangerous and don’t cause any health problems. Treatment isn’t necessary. However, some people want to remove age spots because they don’t like the way they look.

Age spots are the result of an excess production of melanin, or skin pigment. Skin ageing (especially when you turn 50 years of age), sun exposure, or other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, such as tanning beds, are all possible catalysts. You’re most likely to develop age spots on the areas of your skin that receive the most sun exposure, including:

  • your face, neck and decolletage
  • the back of your hands
  • your shoulders
  • your upper back
  • your forearms

I came to this clinic with acne I have lived with for 25 years, which included my neck and upper chest and back. After an initial and in depth consultation, I started to use a trio of topical lotions, 1 to clean, 1 to exfoliate and the last was a moisturiser. A month has passed and I am very pleased with the appearance on my face, neck and upper body. The acne has stopped forming, the scars are now healing and I have a smile too.

Do‘s & Don’ts for Age Spots

Do’s

Preventing Age Spots
You can’t always prevent age spots. However, you can reduce your chances of getting them by doing the following:

  • Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
  • Wear a sunscreen every day. It should have a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of at least 15 and contain both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours, more often if swimming or perspiring.
  • Wear protective clothing such as hats, long trousers or skirts, and long-sleeved shirts. These help protect your skin from UV rays.
